Madog Walks Group

                                This 4.6 mile almost entirely level walk follows the sandy shore and dunes along to the western mouth of the Menai Straits, then skirts around the curious and historic   Fort Belan  coastal fortress and its picturesque dockyard and harbour , returning along the saltmarsh edge of Y Foryd . Outbound along the sands Route : The walk starts from (and ends at) the end of the coastal approach road to Caernarfon Airport. The route along the minor roads to the airport is well signposted from the A499. The walk follows the windswept shoreline, at its furthest point turning in to the tip of the Menai Strait, a point which was once guarded by the presence of Fort Belan (now a holiday cottage complex). Continuing past these fortifications, the route skirts the picturesque Fort Belan dockyard, then returns inland alongside the saltmarsh...

Picnic site in the Vaynol Estate                                Route : The route starts and ends at the Picnic Site in middle of the National Trust's Vaynol Estate.  There is a circular route through the Vaynol Estate and an opportunity for an additional branch up to Britannia Bridge and back. Britannia Bridge The route passes a semi-derelict mausoleum building deep in the Vaynol Wood. Mausoleum The route is through through parkland and woodland beside the Menai Strait, with several good places to stop for a picnic, too! The circular route throught the Vaynol Estate returns to the car park through the meadows. Footpath across the meadows Obstacles : The initial section beyond the picnic site passes briefly through a sheep pasture. Huge thanks to  Grŵp Cynefin for the award of a Community Development Grant to help assure our group's sustainability! The Hafod y Gest Community Grant is a scheme which may make awards of up to £500 to groups working within Grŵp Cynefin’s operational area (i.e. the six counties of North Wales and North Powys). It is made available to voluntary and community groups or to a group of residents who would like to get together to make a difference within their community. We applied to Grŵp Cynefin to assist the group in its first year of operation, to help cover our initial setup and running expenses, such as group insurance, publicity, the booking system on the website, and for some basic training in Canine First Aid. We are really pleased to have been awarded this grant, and are now looking forward to the activities which it now assists us to offer and partake in.

Beach beside Afon Dyrwyd                                      Route : The route starts from the roadside parking at the eastern end of Pont Briwet, close to Llandecwyn Station. This is the best starting point, as the route returns to this point along the banks of the Afon Dyrwyd estuary. View of Pont Briwet, the bridge over the Afon Dyrwyd esturay Follow the pavement along the roadside towards Llandecwyn, and cross the A496. Continue uphill through the houses, eventually turning left onto a public footpath through the fields, just as this road starts to zig-zag steeply uphill. The footpath follows the line of the electricity pylons up the valley towards Llyn Tecwyn Uchaf.
